Orthomolecular Medicine

Sometimes called "megavitamin therapy". It focuses on the use of proper nutrition supported by a combination of large quantities of vitamins, minerals and amino acids to maintain or restore health, or to treat specific conditions. Some of the more common (and seemingly effective) treatments are the intake of glucosamine or chondroitin to treat osteoarthritis. Other common orthomolecular therapies use shark cartilage to treat cancer, or to use chelating agents such as EDTA to treat cardiovascular disease. There is some indication that one form of EDTA (disodium EDTA) may be harmful to patients in some circumstances (Wax PM. 2007. Clinical Toxicology, 45(4), p. 354.)
